CRNA Spotlight: Jenna Finnerty

This CRNA forms meaningful connections with bicuspid aortic valve patients through her own familial experience. Meet Jenna Finnerty, CRNA! star

mag What inspired you to become a CRNA?

My friend's father was a perfusionist, he invited me into the cardiac OR to explore different career options! I was in the middle of nursing school and immediately fell in love with the role of the CRNA in the operating room. Their passion, knowledge, and skillset were so impressive, I strived to become a CRNA!

mag What is your favorite case to do in anesthesia and why?

I love doing aortic valve replacement surgeries. My son has a bicuspid aortic valve so I feel a small connection with those patients, and love talking with them before the case starts. The most complex and challenging case in my department is the thoracoabdominal or abdominal aortic aneurysm repairs. These cases require constant attention to detail, and challenge me from start to finish. Most of these are emergency cases or have been turned away from other facilities. It gives me so much joy to give these patients a chance for repair and to see how grateful they are during one of the most stressful times in their lives.

mag What diverse characteristics shaped your education/training? How have they contributed to your practice as a CRNA?

I graduated from Ohio Northern University, which was a very small college. My first nursing job out of school was in a very small town. Coming to the Cleveland Clinic for my anesthesia training was eye-opening. I quickly saw all of the resources that we have, that no other hospital may have. I constantly appreciate the support and practice I was given during CRNA school and strive to give it back to the students I work with today.

Currently, I work with CRNA students and hold monthly workshops for them to practice placing central lines, arterial lines, and PA catheters. I think we are so lucky to have those resources at our fingertips and I love seeing when the students start making connections and learn a new skill!

mag What are some of your hobbies?

I love being active- running, cycling, and hiking. I cannot wait for the warm weather to return, as I am hoping to run the Cleveland Half Marathon this upcoming May! My other hobbies include anything with my family. I love exploring any new activities in greater Cleveland with my 2 boys, Patrick and Benjamin and my husband Sean.

mag Who are some of your most influential mentors?

Angie Milosh was the most influential mentor to me during CRNA school. She is one of the smartest people I know, and can answer any question you throw at her without blinking.

At my current job, one of my most influential mentors is Kristen Geiger. She has such a passion for what she does in and out of the operating room. I appreciate her ability to listen, give advice, and demonstrate empathy in the most difficult of situations. I truly aspire to be half the CRNA, friend, and mother she is.
