OSANA’s student board is where the future of nurse anesthesia in Ohio starts taking shape. This group of Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) represents programs across the state, serves as a bridge between students and OSANA leadership, and helps ensure student perspectives are always part of the conversation around advocacy, education, and the profession’s future.
For the 2025–2026 year, our student board is made up of nine passionate, driven leaders from nine different programs. They bring unique backgrounds—everything from dolphin training to EMS—and a shared commitment to patient safety, lifelong learning, and professional involvement.
Below, get to know each of them a little better.
OSANA 2026 Student Board Members

Angela Humbel, SRNA, University of Cincinnati
Why did you decide to join the OSANA Student Board?
I decided to join the OSANA Student Board after attending an OSANA conference where I saw firsthand how energized and united Ohio’s CRNAs can be. The combination of meaningful political advocacy and genuinely fun, community-building activities made me realize how important it is to help keep students engaged statewide. I left feeling inspired, and I knew I wanted to learn from the team that brings that momentum to life.
Who or what inspired you to take this career path?
My path toward becoming a CRNA was inspired by a mix of early encouragement and an unforgettable experience. I’ve always been drawn to healthcare, and my parents were the first to nurture that interest, especially in nursing. In high school, I had the opportunity to shadow a CRNA through a summer internship program with the Cleveland Clinic, and that experience completely solidified my direction. Seeing firsthand how involved a CRNA is in anesthesia care with combining critical thinking, autonomy, and compassion made me realize this was exactly the career I wanted to pursue.

Why did you decide to join the OSANA Student Board?
I wanted to join the OSANA student board to further advance my knowledge and understanding of nurse anesthetists. Specifically speaking, how the state association is run, what the board members tasks are, and how we advocate for the CRNA profession on a state level. I also wanted to step out of my comfort zone by meeting new people on the board and the student board, in hopes to empower myself to continue growing my leadership skills and advocating for my future profession.
Who or what inspired you to take this career path?
Early on in my nursing career I knew I wanted an advanced practice degree, but I wasn't sure in what capacity at the time. Throughout my experiences, I was once a circulating RN. During this time, I formed close relationships with all of the staff in the OR, including nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologists. I worked regularly alongside these professionals which was very encouraging for me and really rooted my dedication for pursuing this profession. My experiences during this time and witnessing the one-on-one patient care really lit the fire for me. I will be forever grateful for that experience, my mentors there, and the push they gave me. Additionally, being an ICU RN encompasses similar challenges that a nurse anesthetist encounters with critical patients, further emphasizing my desire for this path.

This role allows me to engage with leaders across the state, provide perspective as a student and future CRNA while promoting patient safety and education. I was inspired by both my student peers and CRNA mentors who emphasized the importance of professional involvement; I see this as a way to give back to the profession while growing as a future CRNA.
Who or what inspired you to take this career path?
My grandmother was an operating room nurse, and she often spoke about the critical role CRNAs played in patient care. Hearing her stories sparked my early interest in anesthesia and gave me an appreciation for the expertise and calm presence required in the OR. Her admiration for CRNAs planted the seed that ultimately grew into my own career path, inspiring me to pursue nurse anesthesia so I could carry forward that legacy of patient safety and excellence.

Why did you decide to join the OSANA Student Board?
I decided to join the OSANA Student Board for three reasons. First, I wanted to better learn about my profession’s state association and its role in the growth and prosperity of the CRNA profession. Second, I am thrilled to act as a resource for my program to connect my colleagues with OSANA and its current events. Finally, I am honored to represent the Cleveland Clinic School of Nurse Anesthesia on the OSANA Student Board and hope to make a positive impact on the board as well as my program by reinforcing their connection.
Who or what inspired you to take this career path?
I had accomplished my childhood dream of becoming a dolphin trainer by the time I was 22, and although I achieved additional administrative and leadership roles along the way, I was struck with the thought that I had hit a professional ceiling. I heard the calling to a profession with significant opportunity to challenge myself and continued growth in professional practice, and that’s when I was drawn to nursing. By assessing my interests in dolphin training- a career involving the sciences and caregiving, I felt compelled to incorporate a higher level of cognitive challenge provided by the nursing profession. Using the grit I had learned to love in my previous career, I worked tirelessly to achieve my accelerated Bachelors of Nursing at Kent State University. This effort was not without a plan; I knew the moment I began nursing, with its vast opportunities, I had a particular interest in anesthesia. A fascination with pharmacology and physiology excited me early on, and, after discussing the profession with a family friend who works as a CRNA, I felt energized by potential direction. I had the opportunity to participate in the Cleveland Clinic CRNA Mentorship Program, which solidified my interest. I applied, was accepted, and am honored every day to be perusing this path.

-
Instagram or TikTok? Instagram only because I’ve banned myself from TikTok during school (so much more exciting than studying)!

Derek Clear, SRNA, The Ohio State University
Why did you decide to join the OSANA Student Board?
I joined the OSANA Student Board to become more actively engaged within The Ohio State University’s new CRNA-DNP program. At first, I wasn’t very familiar with OSANA or what it encompassed, but I quickly fell in love with the role. Being part of the board allows me to connect with peers, support student engagement, and help strengthen the voice of future CRNAs in our state. I wanted to be involved in shaping meaningful initiatives that support both the profession and the students entering it. Being part of the board has helped me learn so much about how to advance nurse anesthesia education and advocacy within Ohio, and it’s allowed me to contribute in a meaningful way to both my program and the profession.
Who or what inspired you to take this career path?
My career path was inspired by CRNAs at Nationwide Children's Hospital, 8 years ago, when I started a job there as an Anesthesia Technician in the OR. I became friends with many anesthesia providers there who demonstrated an incredible blend of autonomy, clinical expertise, and patient-centered care. Their calm presence in critical moments, and their ability to make a profound impact during some of the most vulnerable times in a patient’s life, motivated me to pursue the same path.
