SRNA Spotlight: MaKyah Dittoe

This SRNA brings precision, resilience, and a passion for regional anesthesia to the OR.

Describe your prior nursing work experience including both specialty and region.

I gained nearly a year of experience on a neuro-medical surgical unit before transitioning to a medical ICU, where I worked for three years.

In what anesthesia program are you enrolled and when is your projected graduation?

Otterbein University, May 2025

What inspired you to pursue a career as a CRNA?

I was introduced to anesthesia at an early age, having undergone surgical procedures myself and seeing family members experience the same. The science behind it fascinated me, and I was struck by how the anesthesia providers seemed to play such a crucial role in the well-being of patients. The combination of medical knowledge, precision, and the ability to make a real difference in people's lives inspired me to pursue this field.

What is your favorite case to do in anesthesia and why?

Regional anesthesia is my favorite type of case because I enjoy the hands-on skills it requires, particularly when utilizing ultrasound to guide the blocks. There’s a unique satisfaction in watching the block set up and witnessing the patient experience immediate relief, knowing the technique has made a direct impact on their comfort and recovery.

Elaborate on a human difference that was paramount to your becoming the person you are today (i.e., culture, national origin, religion, life experiences, neurodivergence, sexual orientation, gender expression, and/or physical abilities).

Early in my studies to become a nurse anesthetist, I faced unexpected personal challenges that led me to take a year-long sabbatical. This experience gave me a new perspective on life, allowing me to better myself both personally and professionally. When I returned, I had the opportunity to join a new class of remarkable individuals, whose diverse backgrounds and experiences further shaped who I am today.

Who are some of your most influential mentors and why?

Growing up, my dad was a huge mentor, always encouraging me to chase my dreams, emphasizing a strong work ethic, offering unwavering support, and helping me stay grounded and realistic. In my anesthesia career, Abbie Sparrow, CRNA, has been incredibly influential with her intellectual approach, dedication to patient care, and genuine, non-judgmental attitude, which has continuously inspired me. Additionally, Brian Garrett, CRNA, as a program director, has played a pivotal role, guiding me more as a coach than an instructor. His genuine desire to see students succeed and his commitment to our growth has had a profound impact on my professional development.

What are some of your hobbies?

I enjoy being outdoors, boating, and spending time with my family and dog, Remi.

What advice would you like to share with other or future SRNAs?

My advice to future SRNAs is to stay disciplined, keep pushing forward, and never give up, even when it gets tough. The field is challenging, but it’s absolutely worth it.
